SOUL   OF   A   DANCE

Full 3D | Integrated | Motion

Some memories never really leave us. Sometimes all it takes is a familiar rhythm, a small gesture, or a melody to bring them back.

An elderly man sits in his wheelchair inside a house on the verge of abandonment. Suspended in a quiet moment, he waits.
We meet an elderly man sitting quietly in his wheelchair inside a house that has clearly seen better days. Everything feels still… until the music begins to take over. Looking outside the window, nostalgia slowly emerges through small gestures: a foot marking rhythm, a hand keeping time, as if recalling a distant melody.
His foot starts keeping the beat, his hand follows the rhythm, and then something unexpected happens: a glowing version of himself steps free and begins to dance. A luminous presence leaving trails of blue light behind, as if memories had finally found a way to move again.

This project explores the idea that imagination can reach beyond the limits of the body. Dance becomes the thread connecting past and present, reality and memory, transforming a quiet moment into one of freedom. Because some parts of who we are never stop dancing.

The final video contrasts immobility and movement, reality and projection.
Dance becomes a manifestation of memory, allowing the character to momentarily transcend physical boundaries through a digitally reconstructed performance.

workflow

To achieve a believable performance, a professional dancer interpreted the original music directly within the filmed environment.

Wearing a motion capture suit, the dancer’s choreography was recorded to capture timing, weight, and expressive nuance.
The protagonist, Augusto, was subsequently scanned using a dedicated volumetric capture system to obtain a complete digital replica of his body.

After rigging, the recorded motion data was transferred onto the scanned character, allowing the digital double to perform the choreography while preserving the identity and physical presence of the actor.

This section presents the different stages of the process side by side, revealing the transition from live performance to final digital character.

Compositing

The compositing phase integrates all production layers into a unified visual sequence.

The workflow includes the original dancer footage, motion capture dummy data, scan segmentation masks, the fully reconstructed digital actor, standalone particle simulations, and final lighting integration.

Color grading and layering were progressively refined to merge physical footage and CGI elements, culminating in the final image where performance, scan data, and particle system coexist seamlessly.
